Heroes And Villains

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

After many months of waiting, and no thanks to the writer’s strike, the new season of Heroes has finally arrived and it did not disappoint! The season kicked off with a special premiere party and a show recap, followed by the two-hour season premiere. Heroes is showed as a comic book with individual chapters. The new chapter, “Villains,” illustrates how the characters must choose between good and evil.
The overall premise of the show is ordinary people who discover they have extraordinary abilities. These include the ability to fly, telepathy, time travel, self-healing, super strength, invisibility and many more. Their individual powers will work for or against them as they engage in the ultimate fight to save the world.
As the chapters begin, we see that Peter Petrelli comes back from the future in an effort to stop his brother, Nathan, from exposing the truth about these individuals with special abilities. However, in his return, he twists fate and allows Syler to free many of the villains who have been kept in confinement for the safety of others. Syler goes after Claire, who has the ability to heal and we also discover that her abilities are much more powerful than ever. We also discover that Nikki is not dead, but her personality has transformed into that of “Tracy.” Trying to help Maya, Mohinder discovers the genetic composition for gaining such extraordinary abilities and injects himself with the serum, which ultimately goes awry.
This is just the tip of the iceberg as Heroes Creator, Tim Kring, takes viewers on the ultimate journey along with these extraordinary characters in a quest to save the world.

My Trip to Florianopolis

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

After 16 hours of flight, three plane changes and traveling to a different hemisphere, landing in Florianópolis, Brazil was absolutely wonderful. Florianópolis is called “Floripa” by the locals and I was quick to dive into a new and exciting culture. Floripa is an island Photobucket located in Southern Brazil and is the capital of Santa Catarina. Coming from Southern California, it was refreshing to see that the weather was very similar. I went as a student taking a course called Global News Media and attended the Universidade Florianópolis, Santa Catarina. Most of the students at the school were quite fluent in English, which proved to be very handy for me and my other classmates. Everyone was so friendly and welcomed me with open arms.

As part of the course, I was able to visit local media outlets, such as newspapers, television stations and radio stations. The journalists were very busy and the ambiance was not any different than in the United States. While visiting one of the radio stations, a few of the radio hosts decided to interview a few of my classmates and myself live on the radio. Along with our poorly rehearsed Portuguese, our Spanish came in very handy.Photobucket

One of the best things about Floripa is the beautiful beaches. The sunsets are indescribable and I was in awe to be able to see the Antarctic Ocean for the first time in my life. My favorite location on the island was a lagoon called Lagoa de Conceicao! There were so many restaurants, shops and the beach was breathtaking. I will never forget my trip to Florianópolis. Each time I tell someone of my trip, it takes me back to all my wonderful memories and experiences. I made life-long friends and I am definitely planning on returning soon!

Cascarones: The All-Time Party Favors

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

[cascarones1.jpg]Eggs are a big part of celebrating Easter, whether it’s painting them, taking part in an egg hunt, or eating chocolate shaped eggs. Completing the egg theme is the tradition of surprising people by smashing a cascaron on their head! Cascarones are festive, colored, hallow eggshells, filled with confetti. Traditionally used during Easter celebrations in Mexico, cascarones are also used for other special occasions such as graduations or fiestas. It is said that having a cascaron broken on your head brings good luck. Just make sure it’s a cascaron you’re smashing on someone’s head and not a real egg (more…)
